Rio Nexpa is a world class surf break featuring a point break left that can break up to 400 yards when sections connect. It is a preferred surf destination due to its year round consistent conditions; locals claim you can surf 350 days a year. There are two distinct seasons in this region of mainland tropical Mexico, wet and dry. The wet season (June-September) receives long period southern ground swells; the surf is 1-2 times overhead, the water is in the mid to high 80s and air is in the 80-90s. Rain usually comes as local thunderstorms in the evening, daylight hours are mostly clear for surfing.

The dry season (November-May) features smaller swells in the chest to 1.5 overhead range with cooler (75-80°) water temps and 75-85°air temperatures with low humidity. The dominant wind direction is offshore throughout the day, providing groomed tubing waves. The Nexpa River flow is low during the dry season and water is usually clear, waves are bright blue breaking across sandbars formed by the wet season's river flow.

In Nexpa (across from the skate board ramp) is Helen and George's surf shop where you can rent boards and find all the essential surf necessities. There are other surf spots in the area that provide a variety of surfing conditions ranging from mellow beginner beach breaks to advanced reefs, and points.
